Culloden Memorial Day Knoydart-Lismore, Nova Scotia, Canada (New Scotland).
A yearly event.
Rod Chisholm sprinkles "The Breath of Life" on the Memorial Cairn at Knoydart, Pictou County in rememberance of the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The stones forming the cross on the Cairn were donated from the battle-field at Culloden, Scotland, and shipped to Nova Scotia. Three people, a MacPherson and two MacDonalds who fought at Culloden lived to imigrate to Nova Scotia and are buried at this site.
Decendents of the MacDonalds and MacPhersons always carry the flags at the Culloden Memorial. (Note the ice in the Northumberland Straight on this occasion). I have been at this site when the wind howling in off the Strait was so bad I had to wrap my legs in the wreath box to keep from freezing. However the people feel if those poor souls could stand on that open moorland and fight for their lives (with
even their beards frost frozen) we can stand there for twenty minutes and pay our respects.
Usually 300 rally to remember each year when the Culloden Memorial Day is held.
Followed by a dram and hot meal at the Lismore Hall put
on by the Ladies Auxiliary with much of the food donated by farmers in the area.
